DV vs EV SSL Certificates: What Each Validation Level Actually Proves

Domain Validation exists to answer one narrow question: does the entity requesting this certificate control the domain name it covers. That's typically confirmed automatically, through a DNS record, an email to an address on file, or a file placed on the server — no documents, no phone calls, no waiting on a human reviewer. It's why DV certificates are the fastest and least expensive tier to issue.

That narrow scope is also DV's limit: the certificate says nothing about who's actually running the site, only that whoever requested it controls the domain. For a blog, a portfolio, an internal tool or most small business sites, that's exactly the right amount of verification for the job — encrypting traffic and showing a valid padlock without adding cost or delay for information a visitor doesn't need at that content level.

Extended Validation requires documented proof of legal registration, verified physical address, confirmed operational status and a human reviewer's sign-off before a certificate authority issues anything — the most thorough check any of the three tiers performs. That process is why EV certificates take one to three days rather than minutes, and why the certificate itself carries a far larger relying-party warranty once issued.

What EV does not do anymore is change the browser chrome the way it once did — the old green address-bar-with-company-name treatment was phased out across major browsers years back. What survives is the underlying verification: the vetted business name is still embedded as a certificate attribute, viewable by anyone who checks the certificate details, and the far larger warranty still applies. It's a background trust signal now rather than a visual one.
