Domain transfer questions
Does my site or my email drop out while the transfer runs?
No. Moving a domain changes the registrar looking after it and nothing more. Your DNS records travel across with the name, so the website and the mailboxes carry on serving from first minute to last.
Do I really get a free extra year?
On most common TLDs, yes. The transfer stacks a full year of registration onto whatever time is still left on your current term, and you pay nothing on top for it. A handful of country-code and specialty extensions won't allow that. Where yours happens to be one of them, we show you plainly before you pay.
What is an EPP code and where do I find it?
An EPP code, sometimes called an authorisation or auth code, works as the password that proves you own the domain. Ask whoever registers it for you now, either through their control panel or their support desk. Delivery is usually by email, within a few minutes of asking.
How long does a domain transfer take?
After you approve it, most transfers finish inside a few days. Exactly how long depends on the registrar you're leaving and on the rules the TLD's own registry sets. The domain carries on working as normal, so you can use it throughout.
What should I sort out at my old registrar first?
Two jobs where the domain lives now: unlock it and turn off the transfer or privacy lock, then request your EPP code. There's a timing rule as well. The domain has to be more than 60 days old and must not have moved registrar within the last 60 days, and that one comes from the registry rather than from us.
And what becomes of my DNS records once it's done?
